Should you shut down over the festive break?

The short answer is YES! Your staff have worked hard all year round and deserve a break so they’re ready to come back in the New Year refreshed, focused and ready to go.

However, we understand that this doesn’t and can’t always apply to everyone and every business. There are some industries in which it isn’t realistic to close for a full week over the festive season – so here are some alternatives as to how to make it through the next couple of weeks:

  1. Skeletal staff operation – have staff work but at a reduced rate – allowing people to have a few days off allows them to enjoy some of the Christmas break.
  2. Reduce your Christmas hours and make sure your customers are aware. Our Customer Services team continue to work over the holidays but with shortened hours of 10.30am – 4pm on the 27th, 28th and 31st December. Reducing the hours of working is perfectly acceptable over the Christmas period.
  3. Offer remote or flexible working. If you don’t need staff in the office to work, then don’t make them come in. Moral will increase if you allow staff to either work from home; or if they are needed in the office, give them the option of flexible working, so they can still fit in festive activities with family and friends.

So whatever you decide to do just remember ‘Tis the season to be jolly’ as the song goes…

Happy Holidays!
