Twitter is dead – long live #newTwitter!

Well, not quite yet…but if you use Twitter at all I would be amazed if you didn’t already know that the wonderful people at Twitter HQ have launched #newtwitter. But how many of us are yet to get our hands on it?

As I checked Twitter in bed this morning (that’s right I am one of *those* people that can’t get out of bed without checking Twitter) that’s all I could see were 140 character updates about the wonders of #newtwitter. It’s been the third trending topic in the world all day (and second since around 2pm BST) even though the majority of us have yet to use it.

From what I can gather according to Tech Crunch and Mashable many of these changes are around aesthetics, usability and inclusion of multimedia. Great Stuff! How exciting. THIS is going to change my life.

But hang on a minute…I don’t even use the web based version of Twitter! Working as Social Media Strategist it’s much easier for me to use a tool that allows me to manage multiple profiles across a number of platforms. It becomes very time consuming to flick between each individual page and to log in and log out every time I want to use or check a different profile. So my feeling is that they have missed a trick in not allowing the user to sign in with multiple accounts.

It’s also not hard not to notice that Twitter has made this announcement a month and a half after the Tweetdeck matrix excitement, knowing also that there are other Tweetdeck changes on the way, and that Hootsuite announced a number of changes and improvements in June.

Interestingly I found this bit of info today which demonstrates that over 13% of people who use Twitter manage their account via the web based version. So Twitter is ahead of the rest by more than 5%. But consider this, if we combine all the other clients and tools that are used to manage Twitter profiles, Twitter’s web-based version is lagging behind badly.

So will #newtwitter revolutionise the way we tweet? Will it drive hoards and hoards of us to the web-based version? With these changes, my gut feeling is probably not.

What are your thoughts?
