Another attention-grabbing headline for a failing company

Work for HP and waste time commuting. Or work from home and save time. It’s your call?

Marissa Mayer did it back in February, now it would seem Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman is following in pursuit in an aim to try and drive revenue. Whitman has announced that Hewlett-Packard staff will all have to work from the office and although this hasn’t been fully enforced she has said she needs ‘all hands on deck’ implying that remote workers don’t work?

However I can’t help but think that it’s just another attention grabbing headline from a failing company and actually is having people in the office the sole reason for Yahoo’s stock increase? I am going to guess probably not the only reason.

We talk a lot about home working and yes we provide the services to enable that, but I think that is why we believe it in so much. We are a company that is growing rapidly year on year and we have multiple permanent staff that work remotely and everyone in the team is encouraged to work from home when needed. Not only do staff feel more valued, but we often end up getting more work done whilst we are at home without the office distractions. We proactively try to help businesses get the benefits of working remotely, not only with our services but we also try to provide tips and hints to maximise on efficiency when remote working.

Video conferencing means you can have an instant chat with a team member as if they were in the office. In fact our Marketing Director is working remotely today and I just gave him a quick call on our Engage solution and we had a quick chat about the question I had and then we went back to our business. No hindrance to our business by having me in the office and him at home.

It really does seem strange to us that these companies which were at the forefront of innovation and technological development are reverting back to such old school practices… maybe a sign of the fact that they can’t keep up with the times rather than a smart move to build company profits.

Smarter companies encourage work and collaboration in all forms.

What do you think? Remote Working – a business advantage or a hindrance?
